A white barista is going viral after she berated a Black customer for accidentally entering a coffee shop before it opened.
In a TikTok video posted by @jasmineliketheprincess69, a barista at Chez Alex, a coffee and sandwich shop in Brooklyn, appeared to yell at the customer after she entered the store earlier than the opening time.
The customer said she thought the coffee shop was open because she saw another patron leave the establishment with a drink. She intended to buy a pastry and use the restroom at the store before she was confronted by the barista.
“I had to use the restroom, and since the door to the cafe was opened, and I had just seen a white lady leaving the establishment with a coffee, I assumed they were open, and I went in thinking it was OK for me to use the restroom and buy a pastry," a caption for the TikTok video reads.
Video shows the employee chastising the woman for walking into the shop before its official opening.
“Why are you so mad?” the customer asked.
“Because you are being ridiculous! Store is closed, you come here without saying anything, asking anything, you just came straight to the bathroom,” the barista responded.
“I thought you guys were open. I’m sorry. Your door was unlocked,” the customer said.
The woman continued to yell at the patron as she blocked the door of the coffee shop, preventing the customer from leaving. She then insisted the customer call the cops before allowing her to leave the establishment.
Was just assaulted at Chez Alex in Bedstuy by this barista. Black people, please do not support this buissness! I had to use the restroom and since the door to the cafe was opened, and I had just seen a white lady leaving the establishment with a coffee, I assumed they were open and I went in thinking it was okay for me to use the restroom and buy a pastry. Once I came in, this woman immediately started cussing at me. She called me stupid, dumb, and asked if I didn’t know how to read time because clearly they were still closed and had not yet opened. She proceeded to scream at me and then after this video ended, this same barista proceeded to pull my hair and PINCH me! This is how I was treated. Please do not give this cafe any buissness! #bedstuy #bedstuybrooklyn #cafe #racistcheck #racistoftheday #racistshit
“She called me stupid, dumb, and asked if I didn’t know how to read time because clearly they were still closed and had not yet opened,” the customer wrote in the video's caption, alleging racism.
Social media users jumped to the customer's defense following the interaction.
"This is so unhinged. What a crazy over reaction. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I could not have remained as composed as you are," one TikToker commented.
"First rule of closing- LOCK THE DOOR 😂 or if there are still customers inside, turn the sign to closed and let people know when they come in!" another TikTok user said.
"Spread the word.. No coins will be spent at chez alex," a third chimed in.
