A Minneapolis man has been sentenced in a robbery case that involved three men taking a woman’s purse at gunpoint outside of a Brooklyn Park store. A chase with police officers later ensued and the three men were taken into custody by police on the border of Maple Grove and Champlin.

Prestin Taylor, 24, made his guilty plea in Hennepin County courts in April. He was originally charged with one count of first-degree aggravated robbery and one count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle. Taylor pleaded guilty to the first-degree aggravated robbery charge.

Back in December, Brooklyn Park Police responded to a report of a female being assaulted.

According to the criminal complaint, “Dispatch told the officers that a female victim had gotten her purse taken at gunpoint and the victim was following a silver Chevy Equinox that the suspects got into after they robbed her.”

Brooklyn Park officers found the vehicle near the intersection of 89th Avenue and West Broadway. A pursuit ensued, but was later terminated as it became too dangerous.

Officers ultimately conducted a PIT maneuver of the SUV at Nathan Lane in Maple Grove and 109th Avenue on the Champlin border. Three males got out of the SUV and began fleeing on foot.

Brooklyn Park police officers were assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol, Hennepin County Sheriff’s deputies, and officers from the Champlin and Maple Grove police departments.

Officers found Taylor hiding under a tarp under a deck. He was determined to be the driver of the car. Officers also found Jason Mayberry, 34, of Minneapolis, hiding under a car. The third suspect, Darrin Spears, 35, of Columbia Heights, was found by officers in a backyard after he tried to jump a fence and flee.

The complaint states that the victim saw one of the suspects point a gun at her and then she let go of her purse.

“Officers found the purse on the side of the road on the path that the silver Equinox fled,” according to the complaint. “Victim told officers that in addition to her purse, [the suspects] stole about $900, her house keys, a credit card holder and Target bags with about $100 worth of items.”

Taylor was sentenced in court on June 3. He was convicted of first-degree aggravated robbery, which is a felony. He was sentenced to spend 2 years in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud. He is placed on supervised probation for five years.

After his release, he must meet several conditions. Some of those include remaining law-abiding, no alcohol or controlled substances, providing a prescribed medications list to the probation officer, cognitive skill training, mental health evaluation, not using or possessing firearms or ammunition, and staying in contact with the probation officer.

The two other suspects in this case have upcoming court appearances. Both were each charged with one count of first-degree aggravated robbery. Mayberry and Spears’ next court appearances will be for their jury trials starting on Aug. 26.
