The Brooklyn Park Post 630 and Armstrong Post 251 Legion baseball teams met July 9 at Park Center High School in an eventual 6-4 win for the Falcons. The game was part of the penultimate week of North Hennepin Legion action.
Tuesday’s action began in Brooklyn Park’s favor. Maranatha Christian Academy’s Otto Arlt was a reliable force at first base, getting two tags before Justin Walters earned a kill to cap off a good start on the mound. Now at bat, Brooklyn Park loaded the bases with Adam Aasen at the tip of the spear. Aasen got home with two outs on the board thanks to an RBI single from Drew Paape. William Combs found a tag at first to prevent more runs and Brooklyn Park led 1-0 heading into the second.
Armstrong came out with an improved top of the second. Will Hoffrogge hit a single before being swapped out for Micah Eschbach as a courtesy, before John-Carlos Jahnke earned a walk to first. After two outs from Aasen and Arlt, Evan Levy hit an RBI single to score the Falcons first run. Armstrong later scored through Jahnke, who walked home from loaded bases. Brooklyn Park were not done yet and scored two runs via a box call and a wild pitch despite overall strong pitching from Hoffrogge. The hosts led 3-2.
The whirlwind of scoring action had one more inning to play its part as Armstrong took their first long term lead in the the third inning. Kaden Hyland hit a double to start things off, eventually joined by Eschbach on another courtesy for Hoffrogge. A wild pitch and a sacrificial batter helped both reach home plate before an RBI single by John Biehn helped Jahnke make his way home as well and Bryce Johnson walked home from loaded bases to eventually earn Armstrong a 6-3 lead. Trenton Dwyer came in to pitch in the bottom of the third and teamed up with Hyland, now at first, to end the inning quick and clean.
Nevan Johnson came in to pitch for Brooklyn Park in the top of the fourth and helped clean up the game for the hosts, picking up two kills to help get the Pirates back to bat. Despite a bullet run to first for Aasen and a good battle to earn a walk by Arlt, Brooklyn Park could not find a run in the fourth. Arlt had two tags in the top of the fifth to keep Armstrong off the scoresheet, but Dwyer and Johnson thrived as a pitcher-and-catcher duo, earning a kill and a catch on a foul ball to help keep it 6-3.
Brooklyn Park closed the gap to 6-4 with a run for Beau Bratsch off of a wild pitch, but the Falcons were able to close out the game and earn their first win in four games.
Brooklyn Park and Armstrong saw a rematch July 16 (after this edition went to press), in the latter’s final game of the regular season. Brooklyn Park played one more game after that, hosting Lino Lakes July 17.
