TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A woman has died and a man was injured after they were shot at a Mexican restaurant in Brooksville on Tuesday morning, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

The shooting occurred around 10 a.m. at the El Sol de Mexico Bar & Grill at 31079 Cortez Boulevard in the Ridge Manor area.

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said he believes the incident began as a robbery attempt. Luckily, with school being out, several school resource deputies were on the road and quickly arrived at the restaurant.

“They very quickly got some preliminary information and put it out that we were looking for a small dark-colored car, possibly with [Georgia] tags, and because of that, we were able to get that to Highway Patrol, and Highway Patrol actually stopped the vehicle that matched the description,” Nienhuis said.

The sheriff’s office identified the suspect as 21-year-old Donald Donell Jamison. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and robbery. Additional charges may be pending.

According to deputies, the man who was shot is expected to be OK.

“It’s really a miracle that nobody else was injured,” Nienhuis said. “We always like to make sure that people understand, and I think young people unfortunately don’t understand this very well that once that bullet leaves the gun, it doesn’t always hit the intended target. Even in a case like this, it could’ve been a young child that got hit by a ricochet.”
