No. 1 PVHS softball comes back to defeat Woodland and win D North title
BREWER - No. 1 Penobscot Valley softball won their first Class D North title since 2019 on Tuesday, defeating No. 6 Woodland 4-3 in a comeback effort. The Howlers took an early 1-0 lead with an Emma Potter RBI single that brought home Lauren Veino. Woodland then tied it up at 1 in the top of the second as Lydia Cropley scored on an error. The Dragons would plate two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 3-1.
Students help pick up kelp equipment in Belfast
On a foggy, misty day, Belfast students from BAHS and THMS involved with the Marine Institute program recently helped retrieve their kelp farm equipment from their LPA (Limited Purpose Aquaculture) site off City Park. Three 400-foot lines, buoys, droppers, and anchors were all picked up to be cleaned, dried and stored until the planting season returns in November.
FIre department responds to protect brook from gas spill
ORLAND — The Orland Fire Department on June 4 responded to a broken down vehicle on Happytown Road for a strong odor of gasoline. “Arriving units found the vehicle’s gas tank had broken free and lost its contents into the nearby culvert into a small run off stream,” the Fire Department posted on its Facebook page.

What a nice surprise to see the fireplace in the Fowler-True-Ross House. It was the homestead of my great-grandfather, Captain Andrew McGilvery Ross. My father, Clark Nichols, was born in that house, in 1914, and when he retired to Searsport, in 1976, he began a second “career” as a trustee of the museum and loved to give tours. In later years, he’d proudly remark that he was the luckiest man alive — most people have to die before their birthplace becomes a museum, but he was still around to tell others what a wonderful treasure it is.
Trojans edged by Ellsworth in playoff thriller
ELLSWORTH — Trailing 9-6 heading into the top of the seventh in a playoff quarterfinal against Ellsworth, the Trojans softball team refused to go away, with Allibeth Horner ripping a leadoff double and, after Ellsworth pitcher Camryn Clough got a groundout and strikeout, Lexi Tozier gave the Trojans life with an RBI double.

Trenton announces third annual Butterfly Festival on July 13
TRENTON — A pollinator parade, a raffle, children’s activities, live monarch butterflies and educational stations will be at the third annual Butterfly Festival on July 13 from 3-5 p.m. hosted by Trenton Butterfly Gardens. The festival will take place at the fire pond behind the Trenton Town Office. (The rain date is July 20.) Participants of all ages are encouraged to dress up in their best pollinator costumes and march in a colorful procession during a day of activities celebrating these beautiful and important pollinators.

(Lincolnville) A body found in Lincolnville last week has been identified as that of a missing Union man. The Pen Bay Pilot reported the body was discovered last week, and had apparently washed up just north of Lincolnville Beach. Authorities say the body was that of 30 yo Jonah Farley, who was reported missing to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office on May 18th. More information was not readily available.
