Walz Promises Southern MN Family “Full Investigation” Into Daughter’s Death
(Pine Island, MN) — Governor Walz is promising a southern Minnesota family a full investigation into their daughter’s death. Walz visited Pine Island yesterday to talk about state resources available to new farmers. He was asked about the charges brought against Minnesota State Trooper Shane Roper following a May crash that led to the death of Owatonna’s Olivia Flores. Walz called the crash “tragic” and said the investigation is needed to determine if policy changes are needed. Roper is facing multiple charges, including manslaughter and criminal vehicular homicide.
Big Lake Man Hurt In Crash Near Melrose
MELROSE TOWNSHIP (WJON News) -- A Big Lake man was hurt in a single-car crash Friday night. The Minnesota State Patrol says at about 7:15 p.m. a pickup driven by 40-year-old Daniel Holappa of Big Lake was going east on Interstate 94 when he left the road and hit the median barriers at the intersection of Highway 4.

Fosters needed after Minneapolis shelter responds to hoarding cases
MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Animal Care and Control (MACC) is looking for people willing to foster cats or dogs — and these animals' lives depend on it. The Facebook group Friends of MACC posted that the organization impounded 25 cats in a single day in July and anticipates adding another 16 cats due to hoarding cases. Several were adopted, but nine of these cats aren't ready to be placed on the adoption floor due to nervousness.

Tollette Joins SJU Hockey’s Coaching Staff
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University head hockey coach Doug Schueller announced the addition of Travis Tollette as his assistant coach on Friday, July 19. A 2013 graduate of Bethel University, Tollette recently served as an assistant coach for the Royals for four seasons from 2018-23. The Andover native coached at the youth, high school – as an assistant coach at Providence Academy for two seasons (2016-18) – and elite league levels for five years. In 2021-22, Tollette helped lead Bethel to its first MIAC playoff appearance in 14 years and the Royals became just the second team defeat U.S. National Under-18 Team in the last 20 years on Oct. 15, 2022 (4-2). "We are very excited to welcome Travis Tollette to the Johnnie Hockey family," Schueller said. "He will bring a wealth of knowledge to our hockey program through his experiences playing and coaching at Bethel. It was very important to me to find someone with experience recruiting to a Division III hockey program and Travis has shown great success in that area.
Rox To Wrap Up Homestand With Three Weekend Games
The St. Cloud Rox will wrap up a six-game homestand this weekend before getting some time off for the All Star break. The Rox, winners of five straight games and currently in first place in the Great Plains West Division, will host the Bismarck Larks for a 7:05 first pitch Friday night.
