Brown County Genealogical Society Meets on June 20
The June 20, 2024 Brown County Genealogical Society meeting was opened by President Ray Thieme, with 17 members and guests present. Sharon Pontious presented the second half of her interesting program on Hiawatha Descendants of the Mayflower. Her program followed the Mayflower’s journey to America and the passengers’ life at Plymouth. Attending the meeting were the following Hiawatha residents who are descended from the Mayflower passengers: Sharon’s ancestor was William Brewster; Steve James’ ancestor was also William Brewster; and Jane Bebermeyer’s ancestor was Richard Warren.
Stover’s arraignment moved to September after hearing
An arraignment for Hiawatha resident Jeremy Stover was set for September after a hearing was held on Monday morning at the Brown County District Court. According to Brown County Attorney Kevin Hill, Stover was planning to plead to three counts of sexual battery and three counts of buying sexual relations. Stover’s attorney requested a continuance when he was informed of a requirement in the law that he had not advised his client of.
Two Hiawatha residents arrested on Saturday
Two Hiawatha residents were arrested on Saturday, June 22, according to a report by Brown County Sheriff John Merchant. At approximately 8:50 p.m., Morton Alfrey, 63, of Hiawatha was arrested by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office on charges of Possession of Meth and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Two Morrill residents were arrested on June 18, according to a report by Brown County Sheriff John Merchant. On June 18 at approximately 4:25 p.m., the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Children and Families (DCF) went to a residence in Morrill to perform a welfare check, which resulted in the arrest of Alicia Jennings, 33, and Patrick Perkins, 38--both who are of Morrill--on charges of Possession of Meth and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
HES Summer School Kids serve lemonade and receive valuable life skills
Hiawatha Elementary School Summer School hosted a lemonade stand outside of HES on Thursday, from 9 a.m. to noon. Both regular and pink lemonade were sold for 50 cents a cup. HES Summer School Site Coordinator Marissa LeMay said the funds made by selling lemonade would be going to the Brown County Humane Society and that the lemonade stand was an opportunity to learn math skills.
