Columbus, OH. State of Ohio Representative Darnell Brewer is taking a stand on vehicular homicide. Brewer is seeking changes to sentencing.

In a recent press release, State Representative Brewer expressed his concerns about irresponsible drivers.

"The life of Samantha Nelson matters! I am outraged by the sentence handed down by Judge Matia. Our offices understand the defendant pleaded to the highest level of vehicular homicide but yet was only given 30 days of jail time. I have spoken with prosecuting attorneys, who have informed me that this is not the only case I should review regarding vehicular homicide and judicial discretion. I will be working to research and introduce legislation to address the issue of minimum/maximum sentences as it relates to vehicular homicide. In addition, Samantha leaves behind two beautiful girls who now mourn the life of their mother and a family who faces the financial burden of taking care of these lovely girls," said Rep. Brewer via the press release.

Samantha Nelson, 22, was killed the night of March 3, 2023, in a wreck on the highway in Cleveland, according to the WKYC TV 3 report (as the Cleveland Police released the details). They said that videos released by Cleveland police showed a red Honda and a red Bentley appearing to race at a high rate of speed down the highway.

"Our offices will also be looking into legislation where an offender will be expected to make payments, e.g., child support until the child is 18 or until the child graduates from high school, whichever is later, to include crimes such as vehicular homicide and intoxication manslaughter. Every life in Ohio matters, and we must hold those who take any individual's life accountable, " stated the press release.

Concerned citizens can contact State Representative Brewer of Ohio House District 18 about this issue at Rep18@ohiohouse.gov or 614-466-1414.

30 days is ridiculous when you are road racing and hit and kill someone! That is not justice! Ask yourselves how would you feel if it was a member of your family!

Again the question, was she wearing a seatbelt? Something that was designed to save lives in those kind of accidents. is it possible carelessness on her part contributed to her death? And I don’t want to hear any whiners. It is a law for a reason.
