Cleveland, OHIO. Within the city of Cleveland, some motorists are annoyed by "speed tables."

According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials, speed tables are midblock traffic calming devices that raise a vehicle's entire wheelbase to reduce speed.

Do they work? Are they effective? Do motorists slow down? Do they prevent accidents? Are pedestrians safer with speed tables? Are they worth the cost? Who's fooling who? Are speed tables used to eliminate traffic cops - to lower the human capital needed to monitor negligent drivers? What is the overall purpose?

Motorists ask several questions as they drive through or around "speed tables." Will the speed table cause motorists more harm than good? If a vehicle is damaged, where is the liability - who is responsible?

If cities are using taxpayer dollars to fund speed tables, who is responsible for monitoring their wear and tear, including damaged ones?

Uproar from Angery and Concerned Motorists

There are speed tables in Cleveland's WARD ONE and WARD Two neighborhoods. One in particular, located on E 147th Street, is damaged. It appears as though someone plowed through the caution pole, which is there to warn motorists of the "speed table." The pole was on a nearby unkempt lawn covered in grass and weeds. "This is terrible. So, people are just that disrespectful. They don't care if there are cameras, speed tables, or caution lights. They will drive around the table and on sidewalks. They do what they want because there are no consequences," stated a concerned Cleveland motorist.

"There's no way you could see that speed bump at night. That will cause more damage than it fixes," scoffs a social media follower, Billythatkidd.

This speed table is in an unsafe community. Motorists should drive with caution. We ask everyone to abide by the speed limit. This speed table may be the item that damages your vehicle and causes you harm in the middle of the night.

"If council people would get off their butts and walk and drive the neighborhoods where they are elected to serve, maybe they could prevent half of the harm that is caused to most innocent people. In this case, report this to Cleveland city officials. I would not want to see anyone injured because they did not know there was a speed table," commented Jay Williams.

Brown on Cleveland will file a complaint with the City of Cleveland on Monday morning.

One was recently placed on my street in Maple Heights, with signage. I heard some "thumps" at night the first few days, but that has stopped as the drivers have become aware of the placement. It has not only slowed traffic and prevented accidents (5 in the two months preceding) it also has cut traffic on the street, diverting it to Libby Rd.

I'm glad they're there. I was hit by a Hummer speeding on that street and the person kept going
