Empowering Health: Black Men's Wellness Fair

Cleveland, OH. - University Hospitals and sponsors held the Black Men Health and Wellness Fair this morning at the Wade Oval.

With over 200 people in attendance, the Health Fair had many opportunities and resources for children, teens, adults, and senior citizens. Although the fair was geared towards Black Men, there was something there for everyone. "It's a beautiful day, and we are here not just to enjoy the company of our colleagues and community partners; we are here to stress why everyone needs to get health screenings and see their doctor regularly. We never want it too late to say, "I wish I should have." We need to learn to get checked out to ensure that we stay healthy and maintain our independence," said Ron Billups, who attended the fair with his wife, Sheila.

The Black Men's Health and Wellness Fair kicked off at 7:00 a.m., but many vendors began to arrive at 5:50 a.m. "It's early in the morning. Heck, it's dark out here. It does not matter. We came to be part of this Fair, and I am happy that University Hospital supports these kinds of programs for our men—not just Black men but all men. Being healthy and staying healthy is vital to our livelihood," said Doris Hall, a small business owner and a participating vendor.

The Health and Wellness fair consisted of a 5k walk, health screenings, a talk with the doctors, community resources, food trucks, and entertainment. The day's highlight was the fitness instructor, who galvanized many people to participate in his 30-minute workout session at the fair.
