    Tropical Storm Alberto forms in Gulf of Mexico, first storm of season

    After the slowest start to a hurricane season in a decade, the first named storm of the season, Tropical Storm Alberto, formed Wednesday.

    Tropical Storm Alberto, a wide-reaching, lumbering storm, was about 295 miles south-southeast of Brownsville, Texas, around 11 a.m. The storm is moving west at about 9 mph, and maximum sustained winds were 40 mph, according to forecasters.

    The tropical storm does not pose a threat to Florida.

    The massive storm has tropical-storm-force winds extending more than 415 miles north of its center.
