BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — SugarFest, a sugar cane harvest festival at the West Baton Rouge Museum, has demonstrations, live music and plenty of sugary treats.

The free harvest festival is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6. Event organizers at the museum said people can learn about local culture and history while enjoying a day of craft demonstrations, live music and old-fashioned pastimes.

Demonstrations include cane cutting and grinding, cane syrup boiling, praline candy making, blacksmithing and woodworking. Kids can spend time playing Bourre in the Café Français area, where only French will be spoken.

According to the museum, what’s new this year is a live auction of hand-crafted items at 1 p.m. in the Big Red Barn.

People with a big sweet tooth can enjoy fresh chewing cane samples and a sweets contest. Recipes for cookies, cakes, pies and candies are welcome for the contest. Entry forms can be found on the West Baton Rouge Museum website and entries must be at the festival between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Adults ages 21 and older can participate in a rum tasting while learning about how sugar cane is made into spirit.
