BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The candidates running for Baton Rouge Constable share their plans and goals if elected.
The two candidates running for Baton Rouge Constable are Terrica Williams and C. Denise Marcell.
Current constable Williams has been in office since 2019 and has broken barriers by being the first female city constable in the history of the agency. This election season, she is seeking re-election.
“When I decided to run for this position in 2018, it was because I had a passion for law enforcement. I had a passion for my community and to be able to help my community grow,” said Williams.
Running against Williams is Louisiana State Representative C. Denise Marcell.
“I want to go to the constable’s office and make the constable’s office the best that it could be,” said Marcell.
Williams said during her time in office she has made much-needed improvements and upgrades that have helped the agency.
“I’ve been able to invest in new equipment such as Tasers, laptops, weapons, brand new units, just everything that the officers needed, even getting officers an 11% pay increase,” she said.
If elected for the position, Marcell said she plans on bringing her experience from serving in the city council and as a state representative to bring more funding to the office.
“I currently serve on an appropriations committee, so that’s the money committee,” said Marcell. “I’ve had those relationships and certainly know where the pots of money are for a lot of the law enforcement issues,” said Marcell.
What Louisiana voters should know before Nov. 5 election: Early voting times In regards to knowledge and experience for the position, both said they are qualified.
“I started my career at the sheriff’s office,” said Williams. “I started in communications courtroom security. I worked at the parish prison. I also attended the 162nd Basic Training Academy. So I have the training, I have the knowledge, and I have the experience because I have worked in the Constable’s Office.”
“I went to work for Major Brown and Criminal Processing, and the sheriff’s office and I left, went back to the legal field, and then I was called back by him to work in the constable’s office,” said Marcell. “So for me, it’s a full turn of events. I’ve done policy making, I’ve been an advocate, I’ve done a lot of things on the council state rep, and now I’m just going to return back to what I started in.”
Early voting runs from Friday, Oct. 18 through Tuesday, Oct. 29. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
