BRUCEVILLE-EDDY, Texas ( FOX 44 ) – The City of Bruceville-Eddy has announced the approval of its very first sanitary sewer system project.

The city says this project has been in planning since approximately 2008, and received the green light from the City Council in June. It is a significant milestone coming after years of planning and collaboration between city officials, engineers, community stakeholders and federal agencies.

Throughout the history of the Bruceville-Eddy community, residents and businesses have been relying on on-site solutions for wastewater treatment. Many of these systems have grown to a state of ill repair, costing homeowners and businesses large sums of money on necessary repairs. The city says this new project will provide a vital “public good” for citizens and businesses for decades to come.

The project has a construction budget of just under $20 million, and will be financed through a combination of $9,475,000 in loans and $8,870,000 in grants. The City of Bruceville-Eddy has been working with the USDA Rural Development Office to obtain this money since 2017. Delays such as the global pandemic and property right acquisitions pushed timelines on multiple occasions, requiring waivers from the city’s funding agency to keep everything on track. One of the most significant costs associated with the project was the cost of providing customer “hookups” to sewer mainlines. Getting this portion of the project included from the start was a non-negotiable priority for City Council.

The city says the anticipated timeline for the construction of the new sewer system is approximately one year after loan closing, which is expected to occur in the late summer or early fall of 2024.

During the construction period, residents can expect to see a frenzy of activity across various parts of the city. City staff is urging residents to remain patient and understanding as these improvements are implemented. An informational session is being planned for the fall after preconstruction meetings are held with the awarded contractors. The purpose of this meeting will be to address citizen questions and concerns regarding construction plans.

The city says this new sewer system represents an investment in the future of Bruceville-Eddy, aiming not only to improve infrastructure but also to enhance environmental stewardship and support sustainable growth. The City Council remains committed to keeping residents informed and engaged throughout every stage of this transformative project.
