‘We Burn Daylight’ revisits Waco through the eyes of young lovers
I remember watching federal agents storming the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. For some inexplicable reason, my fifth-grade teacher wheeled a television into our classroom in Banquete, 300 miles away, that afternoon on April 19, 1993, so we could watch together as tanks rolled into the buildings, the subsequent fire raged, and the reporters lamented the men, women, and children who burned to death. In the following years the horrors of that day have largely subsided from American memory. Waco is now better known as a design mecca, thanks to Joanna Gaines and her Magnolia empire. But the ghosts of those lost in the raid still haunt Texas, and author Bret Anthony Johnston both fictionalizes and resurrects their story in “We Burn Daylight,” his first novel in a decade.

Temple woman accused of shooting at women in Killeen faces trial
A Temple woman who is accused of shooting at two women in Killeen during a child custody-related incident almost four years ago, is set to face a jury this week. Kyia Brownlee, who also is known as Kyia Withers, 30, was indicted by a Bell County grand jury on Dec. 16, 2020, on two charges: aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which is a second-degree felony, and deadly conduct by discharge of firearm, a third-degree felony.
