True stories of women of guns and gusto at WPA Theater

The We Piddle Around Theater in Brundidge will host a free, hour-long performance of “Starch in their Petticoats,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 23.

Nationally acclaimed storyteller Dolores Hydock will put the “story in history” with true stories of women who were pioneers, homesteaders, pistol-packin’ card sharks, entertainers and “upstairs girls.”

“They all played a part in putting the shine in the Golden West of the 1800s,” Hydock said.

Photographs, diary excerpts, letters and newspaper articles of the day help bring the stories of these women of the Old West to life.

“The Brundidge Historical Society is excited to be able to host this free concert at our Brundidge theater,” said Johnny Garrett, BHS president. “This exciting and highly entertaining performance is sponsored by the Alabama Humanities Alliance of which Dolores Hydock” is a Road Scholar.”

Garrett said Hydock is a familiar and favorite performer at the We Piddle Around Theater.

“We were honored to have her premier performance of “The Audrey Williams Story” at the We Piddle Theater and it has been well received at other venues.”

Hydock’s Christmas program, “Stubby Pringle,” is and continues to be a popular Christmas program for theater goers. “Stubby” is now an annual Christmas feature of WTBF Radio in Troy.

Tickets to “Starch in Their Petticoats” are free, but limited. To reserve a ticket(s) call 268-2553. Tickets will be available for pick-up the day of the performance at the theater.
