SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV)- The founder of the non-profit Fight the War Within appeared in court on Friday after being arrested on accusations of defrauding the federal government.

Miranda Briggs was arraigned in the Federal Magistrate Court in Brunswick and accused of wire fraud and theft of government money, property or records and could face up to 20 years in prison and substantial financial penalties.

Briggs was granted a $10,000 bond which she posted.

Court records claim that Briggs had divorced her husband, a U.S. Army veteran in 2017, prior to him taking his life. Briggs was removed from his VA award and wasn’t supposed to receive any money.

In 2018, Briggs allegedly claimed that she was still married to him at his time of death and received more than $130,000 from the VA in benefits as the spouse of a veteran who passed.
