JMU grads filling key roles in teaching, nursing throughout Virginia
James Madison University graduates are helping Virginia meet the need when it comes to careers that are significantly understaffed including teachers and nurses. JMU’s annual career outcomes report found that more than 200 graduates from the class of 2023 found jobs in the teaching profession in Virginia, and another 167 reported that they were working in nursing in the state.
MPD Provides Rapid Response to Spike in Georgetown Crime
The week of July 15 saw unusually high levels of criminal activity in Georgetown. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Second District rapidly mobilized to address the short-term spike in crime head on with a significant increase in officer presence and the ongoing dispatch of its Mountain Bike Unit. MPD Commander Savoy, Captain Haskis and Lieutenant Merzig have been extremely responsive to community groups, such as the Citizens Association of Georgetown, ensuring the neighbors and other stakeholder in the community are aware of any updates in real time. Community groups are working with MPD to support additional safety measures to deter, prevent and prosecute criminal activity.

Theatre Review: ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘The Rover, or the Banish’d Cavaliers’ presented by Shakespeare Theatre Company Academy
For the first time in its 24 years in existence, Shakespeare Theatre Company is presenting the final performances of the STC Academy’s Master of Fine Arts program on one of the theatre’s main stages. The Repertory productions are Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and the 1677 Restoration comedy, “The Rover, or the Banish’d Cavaliers,” by Aphra Benn. The actors in this year’s class are strong talents, and we can expect to see them trodding the boards at STC and other top theatres in no time. With few exceptions, they prove to be exceptional performers. That said, the two shows selected for the Academy Summer Repertory have a few issues.
