Drunk guy legally changes his name to Celine Dion

    2021-01-26

Think this is a joke? No, and it seems oddly appropriate for this chapter in history.

It's all coming back to him now.

A United Kingdom-based man recently got so trashed that he changed his name to Celine Dion -- LEGALLY. And then, as a good drunk might, he forgot that he changed his name.

The 30-year-old was already a massive Celine Dion fan (and if you're wondering, he used to be named Thomas Dodd), but after a good several rounds of Christmas Eve drinks and watching the 52-year-old original Celine Dion on television, decided he would actually take her moniker as his own. As one does, right?

He recently told the New York Post via Twitter, "She is my go-to person I listen to when I need cheering up."

He continued by explaining that he spent so much of the pandemic lockdowns and social distancing by watching the Canadian superstar singer's concerts at home, that after a magnum of chamgagne given to him by friend, he ended up being Celine Dion, part deux. While he was enjoying her Christmas Eve television special the urge to submit an online name change application just sort of bubbled up, and 89 pounds (or about $120 USD) later, he was headed down the Canadian name path his parents likely never predicted.

"I honestly, hand on my heart, don't remember doing it!" he says. "I remember watching the concert and getting rather tipsy." Several days later he came from from work in Staffordshire, England to find mail with documentation of his name change.

"I wasn't aware I had done it until I found that envelope in my post," he tells of the now-comical name undoing. "Initially, I had had to sit down as I couldn't believe it -- so then I checked my bank which confirmed it all. Once it sunk in, I signed it straight away as I bloody love her."

Just to be clear, he realized the crazy error he made in his drunken stupor, and then doubled down to confirm the change legally. He might be the first person in history to make such a bold tipsy decision and actually stand behind it when sober.

He went on to share images of his "change of name deed" on Twitter, and yes, his social media names have been changed to reflect his new Canadian mega star name. He is now "MR. CELINE DION" according to official British government paperwork.

"I currently have papparazzi camped outside," he said of his newfound internet fame, punctuated by the laugh-cry emoji, adding that his "inbox is full of Celine Dion fans asking me to record them a video message."

The only issue he sees on the horizon? "I've just moved into a small village and haven't spoken to many people. It'll cause quite a stir when I tell them my new name."

Cheers to Celine. Both of them!

This guy seriously had to have wanted the attention. Not only would he have been coherent, but there has to be more follow up steps to a name change. đŸ€Ł ~Aloha

I feel like they should make it harder to legally change your name.
