Bryson and Woodson tangled in the battle of the Cowgirls Jan. 30 in Woodson. Woodson took an early lead and made it stick in a convincing win for the hosts. Bryson had its season ended Feb. 6 with a home game against Garner. Photo/Brian Smith Woodson’s girls jumped out on an 11-0 run against visiting Bryson and took a 37-13 District 12-A win Jan. 20. Bryson took an early lead 2-0 lead on a cutback by senior Brooke Bennett. Using steals on telegraphed passes, Woodson was able to get some easy laying to build its lead. Bennett snapped the run with 2:48 left in the first ending a more than four minute scoreless string for the visitors. Woodson countered with a late basket. Bennett’s baskets were the lone offensive spark for the Blue in the first, the visitors shooting 2-10 from the field and finding themselves in a 13-4 hole after one. Junior Braydee Thorne added a second quarter bucket. Unfortunately, it would prove to be the lone points for Bryson in the second, as the visiting Cowgirls were 1-11 shooting in the frame. Woodson outscored Bryson 9-2 in the frame to take a 22-6 lead at the half. Neitherteamcould find much offense to start the second half, the first points coming nearly five minutes into the eight-minute stanza. Bryson had difficulty throughout getting the ball down low throughout the game and that continued in the second half. The visiting Cowgirls took just six shots in the third quarter because of Woodson’s defense. Bryson played solid defense in the third, allowing just five points on 1-11 shooting and three free throws. The hostesses took a 27-6 lead Junior Kaylie Sherrin snapped the scoreless drought for Bryson, muscling her way down low for an offensive rebound and basket in the first 30 seconds of the fourth. She added another basket barely a minute later. Sophomore Abby Zielinski had the final Bryson basket of the evening with Sherrin adding a free throw down the stretch. Sherrin paced Bryson with five points with Bennett contributing four.
