BISD sees less funding, higher insurance cost for upcoming year Brian Smith Tue, 06/25/2024 - 9:44 pm Bryson ISD discussed items regarding an increase in insurance, as well as a decrease in federal funding during the Monday, June 17 meeting. Health insurance BISD board members approved an increase in employee health insurance during the Monday, June 17 board meeting. Superintendent Greg London told the board that insurance from the Texas Retirement System would be increasing from $462 to $492 a month for the 2024-2025 school year. The district pays for employee health insur- ance, which is supplied by TRS in full for those who want it. London said 33 of the 42 district employees take the insurance. The increase will amount to $990 a month, or $11,880 for the next school year in the district budget. Title I funding London told the board there will be a reduction in the amount of Title I funding, that the district receives for the 2024-2025 school year. Title I is a federal education program that supports lower income students throughout the state and nation. Title I was developed to help reduce gaps in education achievement between students who are and are not low-income funding. The district will receive somewhere in the $85,000 to $87,000 range this upcoming year, down from $100,000 to $110,000. The reduction was statewide from the federal government, London said. The funding is normally spent on salaries of teachers who work with those who need specialized help. London said the district normally keeps about $10,000 or so out of the funds for projects that may not be fundable otherwise. A purchase of Chromebooks for students is being looked at, London said.
