This Week at the Purdue Student Farm
This week’s biggest event has been the lauded, long-awaited debut of the Bin Washer! It has been named Squeaky Steve :). We’ve been watching vegetables go through it like it’s popcorn in a microwave, and I can confirm that carrots can reach entertaining heights. It’s even got a power washer!!! It almost covers up the sound of Mason and Faith bickering.

HLA’s Youth Outreach in July
On Friday, July 12, Vicki Stirm and Karen Mitchell hosted the C-PASA (Cargill- Purdue Agribusiness and Science Academy) High School students. Participants toured the student farm, led by two summer interns. After that, they returned to campus and learned how an orchardist knows when to harvest apples, as well as did a blind taste test of six different apples.
2024 Purdue Fruit and Vegetable Field Day
The Purdue Fruit and Vegetable Field Day, held on July 18 at Meigs Farm, was a success. Over 75 attendees came out to learn more about the latest research on weed and pest management in horticultural crops. Petrus Langenhoven, Peter Hirst, Steve Meyers, Miranda Purcell, Helen Nocito and Josué Cerritos all participated in the demonstrations, along with colleagues from Wild Goose Chase and the Department of Entomology: Carla Wagner, Laura Ingwell, Samantha Willden, Milena Agila, Robert Grosdidier, and Julie Wooby.
2024 Purdue Turf and Landscape Field Day
The Purdue Turf and Landscape Field Day was held on July 16 at the W. H. Daniel Turfgrass Research and Diagnostic Center. Over 400 turf and landscape professionals attended to learn more about the latest research. Bloomington to install heat sensors to limit health risks
Bloomington will begin installing sensors around the city on Monday to measure heat and prevent related health issues. Data from the 13 sensors will inform the city where to focus heat mitigation.
