Four pickleball courts will be coming to Quaker Penn Park in Falls.

The Board of Supervisors voted last January to spend $294,000 on the courts, and were they supposed to be completed last summer. “There was an issue with one of the contractors, but I think it’s back on track now,” said chairman Jeff Dence.

A pre-construction meeting is set for Sept. 30, with construction to follow. "Weather permitting, early 2025 for opening," Dence said.

The four, fenced-in courts are among upgrades in the riverfront park near Pennsbury Manor and the Penn Warner Club. The improvements include new restrooms and a tot-lot.

The courts are part of a nationwide trend in the popularity in pickleball. With its lightweight plastic balls, low net and paddles, the game is similar to tennis, but has a slower pace, which appeals to older players.

Demand for the game took off during the covid pandemic. Since then, Newtown Township has a proposal to build courts at the shuttered Bed, Bath and Beyond store on Eagle Road, and Lower Makefield announced new ways to reserve its courts, due to high demand. Last year, Middletown opened new courts at Firefighters' Park in Langhorne.
