BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A 45-year-old Philadelphia woman is charged with the October murder of a 72-year-old in his Bucks County home.

According to the criminal complaint, Meghan Macklin fatally stabbed Richard “Scott” McFarland, then cleaned the blood off him and dressed him in other clothes to try to cover it up, leaving the 72-year-old lying on the floor, where he was found by someone interested in buying his Wrightsville home.

Bucks County DA Jenn Schorn says Macklin was arrested the same day McFarland’s body was found, when police in Tennessee were called to a convenience store for a woman eating food she refused to pay for.

“Macklin told police she was traveling with her husband, Scott MacFarland, she gave inconsistent statements about where her husband was while she was in Tennessee and how long she'd been in Tennessee,” she said.

Schorn also says police connected her to the Bucks County murder. Investigators decided not to publicize Macklin’s October arrest in Tennessee or her connection to the murder to avoid compromising the investigation, as Macklin was in custody and was not a threat to the public.

Schor says officials are still figuring out what caused the delay between Macklin’s arrest in Tennessee and murder charges being filed in Bucks County.

“It'll become more clear later,” she said. “There were twists and turns in this investigation and information that had to be ran down. And we knew that the community was safe because Macklin was in custody.”

Investigators are piecing together Macklin’s movements after the murder and ask anyone with information to call the police.
