Nonprofits face funding challenges for construction projects
When the Buffalo Niagara YMCA set aside plans recently for a new branch, it pointed to fundraising challenges.<\p> The organization only has raised $4 million toward the $35 million project in North Buffalo. The organization now will instead build a $5 million camp, illustrating a challenging time for nonprofits with big capital projects.<\p>

Former North Buffalo pharmacy building sold
The owner of Buffalo Pharmacies has sold his company's building at 1479 Kensington Ave., Buffalo, to the owner of the connected plaza, though the company will continue to operate at the site.<\p> Until last year, the building housed a retail pharmacy, a medical equipment store and the headquarters of Happier at Home, an in-home senior care provider.<\p>
Univera lands Highmark client, adds 26,000 members
Univera Healthcare will see its membership grow by another 26,000 members with the addition of a major new contract – pushing its total Western New York membership up over 100,000.<\p> The health plan confirmed it has signed Labor Management Healthcare Fund for the 2025 plan year, a group that includes employees of more than a dozen governmental, public entity and quasi-governmental agencies across Western New York, including several school districts; Erie County; the City of Dunkirk; the towns of Orchard Park, West Seneca and Clarence; and Erie County Medical Center, a public benefit corporation. <\p>
First woman of color to lead Women's Bar Association
Marissa Washington went to law school at Valparaiso University in Indiana and didn’t know many attorneys here when she moved back to Buffalo and passed the bar exam in 2015. <\p> That’s why she joined the state Women’s Bar Association's Western New York chapter. Now, almost a decade later, she’s the organization’s new president and the first woman of color to have the position.<\p>
ValueCentric founder buys 21 acres in Orchard Park
Those looking to live or play in Orchard Park are going to have more options.<\p> That’s David Janca’s goal for the nearly 21 acres of land he recently purchased, through an LLC, for $2.2 million from Merle Whitehead Properties LLC. The sale includes 3960, 3970, and 3980 North Buffalo Road, Orchard Park, which are a mix of vacant residential and commercial properties, according to July 8 filings with the Erie County clerk’s office.<\p>
University wants $24.7M from insurer to rebuild after blizzard damage
Canisius University has asked a court to appoint a mediator in a dispute with its insurance company that dates back to the Christmas blizzard of 2022.<\p> The three-day blizzard caused significant damage to Lyons Hall, along with other parts of the campus, according to documents filed by Canisius on July 1 in New York State Supreme Court in Erie County. <\p>
Catholic Health recruits top Kaleida Health exec to C-level post
Catholic Health has recruited a top executive from Kaleida Health as its new chief physician executive.<\p> Dr. Victor Filadora will leave his post as senior vice president at Kaleida Health and president of Great Lakes Cancer Care. He took that position five years ago after a 15-year career with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he last served as senior vice president and chief of clinical services.<\p>
