The Buffalo United Charter School celebrated its 20th anniversary on Friday night with some local authors and city leaders.

Jayceon McCrimager is a fourth grader at the Buffalo United Charter School. His favorite book genre?

"Murder mysteries," he said. "It's because you have to solve it like the person who's dead, you have to find out who's the murderer."

Toni Amos is the author of Kind Kid Crew and a fan of the Zeneta & Zaire Book Club. The program launched after the Tops mass shooting killed ten people and injured three others, including Councilwoman Zeneta Everhart's son Zaire.

"Everything that the Zaire & Zeneta Book Club is doing is helping to meet the needs of our children," said Amos. "I think seeing themselves means a lot, especially during this Juneteenth weekend. It's a mission to help our children to be able to read better."

Councilwoman Everhart says it's a parent and child partnership that reminds us all to be lifelong learners.

"It's really about humanity. That's what the book club is about," she said. "Bringing humanity back into our children's lives and we hope that the adults will pick up the books too."
