Bodycam footage depicted the moment when Buffalo Police Officer Ronald Ammerman fatally shot Daevon Roberts in the early hours of Wednesday as the officer was holding onto his vehicle.

According to WIVB , the incident began when Roberts,25, was pulled over at excessive speed and had tinted windows. An unbelted 6-year-old child was also in the passenger seat. When asked for identification, Roberts provided a photo of a Georgia license on his phone, but the license was found invalid. The bodycam footage shows the situation escalating when Officer Ammerman opened the car door.

Roberts sped off with the officer’s arm on the car and one leg in the doorframe. Ammerman can be heard pleading, “You’re gonna kill me, bro,” as the vehicle reaches speeds over 60 mph. The car eventually slows down, and it appears Roberts kicked at Ammerman, who then fired several rounds, hitting Roberts as both fell out of the vehicle.

After the vehicle stopped, Ammerman removed the 6-year-old, who was unharmed during the shooting. Roberts initially claimed the child was his nephew but later said it was his nephew. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, and a search of the vehicle uncovered a gun loaded with seven rounds under the driver’s seat.

During a press conference on Thursday, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia defended the officer’s actions, stating, “I believe that is a justified use of force that occurred the other night. When you take into account the fact that the officer found himself at grave risk of serious physical injury or death, the use of that level of force is justified by law, and I do believe that that is a justified use of force in this case.”
