Global tech outage impacts Western New York municipalities

A global technology outage had major impacts on Friday, disrupting flights, banks, hospitals and media outlets .

Below you can find the information the 7 News team gathered on how the outage impacted municipalities and businesses here in Western New York.

ERIE COUNTY IMPACT:

• We've reached out to the Erie County Sheriff's Office.
• 911 services are still working. You can call 911 as normal.
• Phones and radios all still working.
• Computers are not working. Most reporting, tracking and mapping is being done by paper
• In a statement, a spokesperson explained,

• Anyone who has a scheduled appointment with the Erie County Department of Social Services to apply for public assistance through DSS or were planning on visiting the Erie County Clerk’s Office for any New York State Department of Motor Vehicles matter is being advised that the New York State-based system that the county ties into is currently inoperable.
  
  Any type of Social Services or DMV-related transaction will not be able to be processed until the state system is back online. Residents are advised to not visit any office for these specific services until we inform the press and the public that the system is back online and fully functional.

CITY OF BUFFALO UPDATE:

• A City of Buffalo spokesperson has released a statement explaining,
  

  Buffalo City Hall is open. If you are coming to City Hall to do business including paying bills, etc., service may be delayed as some computer systems are down at this time. Management Information Systems (MIS) is working with each department to resolve any issues.

NIAGARA COUNTY IMPACT:

• We've reached out to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.
• You can still call 911 as normal.
• Communications have not been affected.
• The Justice Portal is not working.
• Niagara County officials have released a statement saying,
  

  Some Niagara County Departments have been impacted by today’s global tech outage. Our IT team is working to repair any systems that are down. It is intermittent across departments. If you had business to conduct with the county today, you may want to call the department and make sure they can process your transaction.
  
  

CATTARAUGUS COUNTY IMPACT:

• We've reached out to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office.
• 911 still working as normal.
• Deputies don't have any CAD or mapping software online, so everything is being done without computers.
• Courts have changed their procedures for July 19:
  

  • Physical access to the Cattaraugus Supreme, County and Surrogate Court will be curtailed. With the exception of criminal court arraignments and any emergency criminal matters, emergency matters will be handled virtually. All other regularly scheduled matters will be heard virtually.

GENESEE COUNTY IMPACT:

• We've reached out to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office.
• Dispatchers would not release any impact information. They are referring us to a press release that has not yet been distributed.

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY IMPACT:

• We've reached out to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.
• 911 is will working.
• They have "extensive computer loss" including in their Mayville dispatch center.
• The dispatch center in Jamestown has one computer working
• In a statement from a Chautauqua County spokesperson, they write,

• Despite the ongoing technical challenges, all county government offices will be open for business today. We kindly ask for the community’s patience and understanding as our county employees work to resolve these issues promptly.“

AMHERST POLICE IMPACT:

• We've reached out to Amherst Police.
• 911 still operational. You can still call 911 as normal.
• Radios are still operational
  

NFTA IMPACT:

• We've reached out to the NFTA, which runs the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
• We're told "This outage is affecting flights nationwide so we are advising travelers to check with their airline prior to the airport."
• The Buffalo Airport has everything listed as "scheduled" but ABC News is reporting American Airlines , United and Delta have asked the FAA for global ground stop
• One flight left the airport at 5:30 a.m. but the NFTA warns connecting flights might be impacted.

BUFFALO FIRE DEPARTMENT IMPACT:

• 911 services are working.
• Operating like they were before computers.

CATHOLIC HEALTH UPDATE:

• All of our facilities, including medical offices, are open. Emergency and critical care have not been affected and non-urgent appointments and surgeries may be running on a slightly delayed scheduled.

KALEIDA HEALTH UPDATE:

• A spokesperson sent 7 News a statement explaining,
  

  “Around midnight, Crowdstrike, the anti-virus software company ran its worldwide update. Like so many, Kaleida Health was initially impacted from an information technology standpoint. Around 3 a.m. we activated our internal incident command center to ensure that we can maintain operations. To that end, we implemented our normal computer “down time” procedures to ensure safe patient care. We are encouraging all staff – as well as patients – to report as scheduled. For patients, this would include surgeries, outpatient procedures, ambulatory and clinic visits and any type of physician appointments.”
  

VA HOSPITAL UPDATE:
A spokesperson released a statement explaining,

The VA Western New York Healthcare System is operating as normal and has had no technology disruptions from the global IT issue. All Veteran patient appointments are taking place as scheduled.

ROSWELL PARK UPDATE:
A spokesperson has released a statement to 7 News:

Roswell Park patient appointments, surgeries and procedures will proceed as planned today. While Roswell Park is experiencing technology disruptions as a result of a global outage, care is not impacted. Patients should arrive to appointments as scheduled.

We appreciate everyone’s patience, as there may be some delays in clinic operations as we work to bring all systems back up. We are grateful to our team for their quick response to these widespread issues.
