Bills Camp Preview: One injury away from disaster at corner?

Bills training camp is just a few days away. To get you ready, we will preview one position group each day between now and the first practice at St. John Fisher. We’ll break down each position’s strengths, weaknesses and what single player or factor will most swing the outlook of that spot for 2024.

Today we will focus on cornerbacks. If you missed any of our other previews, here is where you can catch up: quarterbacks, wide receivers, running backs, tight ends, offensive line, defensive line, and linebackers.

Bills strength at cornerback: Taron Johnson

The Bills nickel is for my money the best in the league at what he does. Johnson can lock down pass catchers from small slots to giant tight ends.

He’s a missile in the run defense, unafraid to fire a shoulder at blockers and ballcarriers dozens of pounds heavier.

He’d be great in any D but is Sean McDermott’s scheme showcases all of Johnson’s power. He’s number two behind Josh Allen on the list of injuries that would devastate the season.

Weakness: Depth

The Bills starting outside corners are fine, but Buffalo is one injury away from another full-time dose of the Kaiir Elam experience.

After that, it’s little-used Ja’Marcus Ingram, maybe Cam Lewis if he’s not a safety, and rookies.

If there is going to be a veteran added during the camp, this is the position where I would do it.

X-Factor: Coaching

For the first time under Sean McDermott, John Butler will not be coaching defensive backs this year.

Instead, it’s NFL rookie Jahmile Addae in charge of the corners. McDermott and Bobby Babich are still in charge, but for big-time football the position coach is the guy players work and learn with and for this position this year, it’s a whole new world.
