BUFFALO, WV (WOWK) – The Fourth of July, brings out good old-fashioned patriotism and celebrations across the country, and local communities hosted parades, hot dog eating contests, barbecues, and more throughout the Tri-State area.

One town that got into the Independence Day spirit was Buffalo in Putnam County. The city’s annual Independence Day Parade featured several members of their community, including firefighters, marching bands, churches and more.

“The fire department used to always run it. And then in ’87, they stopped. We didn’t have it that year and everyone was like, ‘oh my gosh.’ So, we got a little group together and we started it back in 1988,” says Program Manager Barbara Reed.

The parade has existed for decades and is put on to bring community members together. And, as with many parades, there are always treats for the community.

“Suckers, slim jims, fruit roll-ups, we got it all. It’s exciting it’s the second time I’ve done it. First time it was just dog treats and my brother wasn’t with me…today my brother’s with me and we’re selling candy,” says Caiden Carpenter.

This is Caiden’s second year selling treats as a vendor at the event. It costs just $10 for vendors to sign up to participate in the event.

The fun didn’t stop at the parade. This afternoon food trucks, vendors, and crafters spread out near Buffalo High School for more celebrations. The town’s fireworks are set for 10 p.m. Thursday.
