Newton to reduce mill rate in 2025 budget
NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Newton City Commission approved a not-to-exceed budget for publication that includes a 1-mill reduction in the tax rate. Newton’s assessed valuation rose by 12.7% for next year, a large increase after many years of relatively stagnant growth. With the mill levy reduction, the City will take in revenue equivalent to an 11% increase in valuation.
Kansas makes the cut for four-star wing Tounde Yessoufou
Four-star prospect Tounde Yessoufou included Kansas in his top group on Wednesday. The Jayhawks remain in the hunt for the versatile wing and are in his top 10 schools along with Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Kentucky, Tennessee, UCLA, UConn, USC and Washington. So far, he has taken official visits to Arizona, USC and Washington.

Manhattan Gemstone Dealer Charged for Diamond Fraud
Manhattan-based diamond dealer Manashe Sezanayev has been indicted Thursday (July 25) for alleged fraudulent practices against fellow jewelry merchants. The Associated Press reported that 41-year-old Sezanayev, who owns Rachel's Diamonds, allegedly had a scheme where he would swindle other merchants by replacing their real diamonds with a total worth of $460,000 with lab-grown duplicates.
