GHS football home opener set for Friday night
It will be the 67th season opener for Comet football on Friday night as they take on Staunton at Don Stout Field. Greenville returns a good deal of their offensive skill players from last year’s undefeated South Central Conference champions. However the Comets graduated a great deal of their linemen from a season ago.

Football Comets Beat Staunton In Opener
The Greenville Comets started the 2024 football season with a home victory Friday night. The Comets defeated Staunton 36-7 in a South Central Conference contest. It was a rough start for the Comets with two turnovers, on an interception and a fumble, in the early minutes of the game. Staunton took advantage after the interception, scoring on a 3-yard run for a 7-0 lead with only a minute and 11 seconds played.
High School Football Week 1 Scoreboard
ALTON - Many high school football teams around the area had no choice but to postpone their games until Saturday, August 31 due to lengthy lightning/rain delays. Notable games that were moved to Saturday include Roxana @ Jerseyville (2 p.m. start), Gillespie @ Piasa Southwestern (2 p.m. start), Edwardsville @ Chatham Glenwood (6 p.m. start), and Althoff Catholic @ Alton (2 p.m. start).
Greenfield-Northwestern Sweeps Group B, Host Shells Do Same In Group C To Advance To First Place Semifinals Of Roxana Volleyball Invitational
ROXANA – Greenfield Northwestern won all three of their matches to win Group B and move on to the first place semifinals, while the host Roxana team did the same in Group C, setting up the brackets for the final day at the 15th annual Roxana girls volleyball Invitational tournament Tuesday evening at Larry Milazzo Memorial Gym, the school’s auxiliary gym, and the Roxana Junior High Gym.The sweeps by the Tigers and the Shells set up the bracket for first through fourth place, which will be played on Saturday morning and afternoon, along with the brackets for fifth, ninth, and 13th places. The tournament MVP and all-tournament team will be announced at the end of the championship match on Saturday.
