Bunkie woman starts Beba's Bites with daughter's encouragement

Rebecca Johnson’s daughter was her biggest cheerleader when it came to starting her freeze dried candy business Beba’s Bites .

“My daughter is like, ‘You know what? you don't ask for anything. Just do it. Just try.’,” said Johnson of Bunkie who was at the Cabrini Farmers Market held from 9-12 p.m. Saturdays in the back parking lot of St. Francis Cabrini Church on East Texas Avenue.

While visiting the Junior League of Alexandria’s “A Very Merry Market” a couple of years ago, she came across a vendor handing out freeze dried candy samples. She tried some, liked that and thought it was something that she could make.

Around 2021 Johnson started her candy business.  Then a year later, her daughter got braces so she couldn’t eat regular candy.

“This actually worked for her. She could eat this. So it was like a win-win,” she said.

What makes Beba’s Bites different from other candies?

“It's actually just a different form of your regular candies,” answered Johnson. “Like Skittles. Instead of being chewy, it's crunchy and it has a stronger flavor to it. It won't stick too much to your teeth.”

And Beba’s Bites come in all sorts of flavors.

“I have three kinds of Skittles. I have the regular, the sour and the Wild Berry. I have Lemonheads, which lot of people who like sour love those.” she said. “I have Jolly Ranchers, saltwater taffy, Now and Laters. I have Caramel, Starburst, Laffy Taffy, Marshmallows and Gummies. Those are my most popular.”
