8-man, Div. I: Wichita County, Hoxie ready to pounce after Lyndon’s magical season
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The stars aligned for the Lyndon football program in 2023. After a successful 8-3 showing in 2022, the Tigers picked up transfer Tannel Heckel, one of the premiere athletes in all of Kansas. His move happened to coincide with the senior seasons of all-staters Kaedin Massey, Jalen Massey, and Casten Wirth. The result was a complete domination of the 8-man, Div. I rank. The Tigers scored at least 48 points in 11 of their 13 wins and held seven opponents to one touchdown or fewer, including the previous favorite, Wichita County, 34-6 in the state championship game.
Northern Heights transitioning to 8-Man football for 2024
The 2024 season for Northern Heights will be a new one in two different capacities. In September of 2023, the USD 251 North Lyon County Board of Education voted unanimously to move Northern Heights from 11-man to 8-man in football. During that same meeting, board members also voted unanimously for Northern Heights to depart the Flint Hills League and enter the Lyon County League. Northern Heights’ addition to the Lyon County League came as Southern Coffey County departed the league after the 2023-24 academic year and joined the Twin Rivers League in Southeast Kansas.
