Craig’s Prototype Facility, where Burton Snowboards makes all of their products, is renowned for its pioneering advancements in the design and technology of Burton's snowboards, boots, and bindings. However, the spirit of innovation permeates every department at the Burton Headquarters in Burlington, Vermont. One significant area of focus for Burton is addressing the issue of single-use plastic packaging by exploring more sustainable alternatives. This initiative has led them to investigate seaweed-based packaging solutions.

Currently, they are in the process of developing a prototype for a protective board wrap made from a flexible seaweed-based film, in collaboration with Sway The Future. This innovative material has the potential to replace the problematic plastic films commonly used in the industry. Although this project is still in the early stages of research and development, Burton understands that true innovation requires time and patience. For instance, it took the company five years to redesign their Step On binding system successfully.

Despite the lengthy process, Burton remains dedicated to finding and implementing cutting-edge solutions that benefit both the snowboard industry and the environment. To learn more about seaweed-based packaging solutions, you can follow @swaythefuture.
