Burnet’s soccer teams played Jarrell on Tuesday night for continued district play. The boys’ games were held in Burnet with the JV team taking to the field first. Sebastian Mendez scored two goals for Burnet and team green held on for a 2-1 win.

Mendez’s goals were assisted by Luis Sanchez and Alfredo Jaramillo. Other’s standing out in the victory were Roberto Montoya who had a good night in goal and Gustavo Vega-Palacios who showed tremendous hustle to put pressure on the Cougars.

The varsity contest started with a defensive stalemate. After 40:00 minutes of play neither team had found a way to score a goal.

Coach Ben Boorman commented, “Both teams had their chances on goal, but could not convert.”

He added, “The locker room at halftime was heated as the leaders of the team were ready to get back on the field and take the game into their hands.”

And that’s just what they did.

Following the break Dwight Lopez’s cross was struck by a Jarrell players hand in the box giving Burnet a PK. Hector Arredondo botted the penalty and put Burnet up, 1-0.

Burnet’s next goal was assisted by Rodrigo Valdez. He got the ball to varsity captain Miguel Valdez who split a pair of defenders and scored on a beauty of a kick putting the Dawgs up, 2-0.

The Cougars didn’t have an answer and Burnet won the game, 2-0.

The win moved Burnet to 2-1 in district play; third in the district.

The Lady Dawgs played in a district con-test on Tuesday at Jarrell and completely dominated their opponents, 8-1. No individual stats were available as of presstime for this contest. The win moved Burnet to 3-0 in conference play.

On Friday the Lady Dawgs hosted Wimberley in a non-district make-up game. Burnet fell behind 2-1 in this one to a large and physical Lady Texan team. Eventually, with continued fight Burnet tied the contest up 3-3 which was the final.

Amelia Griffin pulled off the hat trick versus Wimberley scoring all three of Burnet’s goals.

The boys and girls both played at Lago Vista on Tuesday. The varsity girls will host Gateway on Friday, Feb. 9 at 5:00 p.m. The boys’ teams will have a bye and return to play on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at home versus Marble Falls.
