The varsity Bulldog basketball team just keeps knocking them down and maintained their top spot in District 24-4A play last week with wins over Gateway and Jarrell. The two games were the firsts for round two and the Dawgs moved their district record to 7-0 with the back-to-back victories.

After playing Lago Vista on Tuesday the Dawgs have just two games remaining, both home contests versus Marble Falls on Feb. 9 and Lamapsas on Feb. 13.

In last week’s play, starting on Tuesday at home versus Gateway, the Burnet freshman lost 45-28. Aidan Hausman led with seven points, followed by Ethan Elmore, six; Gavin Oakley, five; Rhyder Corbell, five; Hays Bennett, three; and Preston Miller, two.

The JV Bulldogs lost 48-38 to the visiting Gators. JJ Whigham led with 10 points, followed by Hayden Cox, six; Korbin Campbell, five; Jackson Pennington, four; Peyton Lopez, four; Layne Holder, four; Gage Carrell, three; and Benny Bocanegra, two.

The varsity Dawgs came out hot in their game versus Gateway. Burnet outscored the Gators 23-9 in the opener. Gateway tried everything to contain the offensive onslaught, but it didn’t work. The Bulldogs hit two triples, four doubles, and made nine of 10 freethrow attempts in the first.

Second quarter scoring slowed a bit, but Reese Syphrett connected on two triples, while Jacob Atkinson and Garner Krause each hit a bucket for two. Gateway closed the gap a bit with 16 points in the second and at the break the Dawgs led, 33-25. Burnet maintained their lead after putting up a 15-8 third, and despite a late surge by the Gators the Dawgs moved to 6-0 with a 55-45 victory.

Miller led Burnet scorers with a dozen points. He went eight of eight at the line. Syphrett added up 11 points for the Dawgs, followed by Trey Petty, nine; Krause, eight; Atkinson, five; Baylor Dawes, five; and Aidan Holcomb, five.

On Friday the Dawgs traveled to Jarrell for more district play. The freshman had a hard time on offense and lost, 3419. Bennett led with five points, followed by Xavier Hernandez, four; Corbell, three; Oakley, two; and Joseph Surasky, two.

The JV Dawgs beat Jarrell 43-41. Holder and Whigham each scored 11, 11, followed by Campbell, seven; Cox, five; Jaden Backus, five; Braven Briant, three; and Pennington, one.

The varsity game turned out to be a low scoring affair with the Dawgs coming out on top, 32-28. Miller led with 10 points, followed by Holcomb, eight; Syphrett, four; Atkinson, four; Dawes, two; Krause, two; and Petty, two.

After the game head Coach Roy Kiser said, “Our defense did their job and held them to just 28 points, but we were off all night on offense. We only had one three and missed lay-ups we normally make.”

Kiser added, “Andre came off the bench to give us the spark we needed, and Baylor had some tough finishes at the rim to give us a lead that we held on to. Garner and Reese helped to secure the win with big free-throws at the end of the game.”

The Friday night victory moved the Dawgs to 7-0 in district with a stronghold on first place. They played Lago vista at home on Tuesday, and their two remaining district games will also be in Burnet against Marble Falls this Friday and Lampasas on Tuesday to wrap things up. Bi-District playoffs will begin the following week.
