Mental telehealth program launched for underserved Iowa schools

One Person Killed, Three Others Injured in Palo Alto County Accident
(Palo Alto Co.) One person died and three others were injured in a two-vehicle accident in Palo Alto County Friday afternoon. The Iowa State Patrol says 32-year-old Desiree Angela Sternhagen, of Janesville, Minnesota, was driving a 2013 Kia southbound on 480th Avenue and failed to stop and yield at the intersection with 370th Street. 34-year-old Mathia Kay Nieves, of Emmetsburg, was driving a 2018 Mitsubishi westbound on 370th Street and was struck in the passenger side by the Kia.
Area Schools Deal With New State Truancy Laws
There are new laws on the books that deal with a growing problem of truancy. The hope is to keep students in school and engaged in the subject material. Area schools continue to try and curb the problem, but according to Forest City Community Schools Superintendent Darwin Lehmann, his district also has a few truancy issues.
319 workers out of jobs as Altoona Smithfield plant closes
ALTOONA, Iowa — Friday is the last day of production at the Smithfield meat processing facility in Altoona. The company announced this summer that the ham boning facility at 612 Adventureland Drive NE, would close and 314 workers would be laid off. According to Iowa WARN, a state-run log of notices of layoffs, 319 employees will be affected.
No. 2 Hawks boast 11 returning all-district players from last year’s 5A runner-up
A year ago, the Ankeny football team made a surprising postseason run to the UNI-Dome. This year, the Hawks won’t be able to sneak up on any of their opponents. Ankeny returns several standouts from a team that posted a 9-4 record and earned a runner-up finish in Class 5A in its first season under coach Jeff Bauer, who was named the Class 5A coach of the year by the Iowa Football Coaches Association. The Hawks are second in the preseason rankings by The Des Moines Register.
