Stormont-Vail confirms plans for new medical clinic in Emporia
Stormont-Vail Health has confirmed plans for a new medical clinic serving the Emporia area. In an email to KVOE News, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Tracy O’Rourke says a new facility for its Emporia team would be the best option for meeting future health care needs locally, adding the current space at Newman Regional Health does not give Stormont staff the means to renovate and organize “to accomplish the efficiencies and coordination of patient care that we need.”

Recent water main breaks highlight need for major ongoing, upcoming work across Emporia
It hasn’t been a great week for Emporia’s waterline network. Just Thursday, Underground Utilities crews had to repair water mains on Grove between Chestnut and Lawrence, near the site of unrelated work as part of Emporia’s annual Street Rehab process, and on West 15th between Rural and West. Other unplanned work this week has included a main break at Seventh and Arundel on Tuesday.
Emporia High retention pond project gains second grant
Another notable donation is in hand as Emporia High begins “o-fish-ully” revitalizing its retention pond. Emporia High is partnering with Emporia State University for the upcoming work, and the district announced a $7,000 grant from the Clint Bowyer 79 Fund on top of a $10,000 grant provided by the Chickadee Checkoff program. Organizers, including Emporia High Science department head Matt Irby and Emporia State Associate Professor Erika Martin, are awaiting word on other grant applications.

The prospect of a brand-new medical facility in Emporia led the early conversation for Wednesday’s Q&A with City Staff. City Manager Trey Cocking answered numerous questions about the current state and future options for Stormont-Vail’s projected building near Roads 180 and G, as well as the possible financial harm to Newman Regional Health if Stormont is allowed to move its staff currently operating at Newman Regional Health to the new facility and then duplicate several services already offered by Newman Regional.
