Two automakers on Tuesday issued “Do Not Drive” warnings for hundreds of thousands of vehicles equipped with recalled and unprepared Takata airbags. Ford Motor on Tuesday said there are roughly 765,600 airbag inflators in Ford and Lincoln vehicles around the world, including 374,300 in the U.S. Ninety-five percent of U.S. customers have answered the automaker’s more than 121 million outreach attempts.

Ford and Mazda have issued an urgent “do not drive” warning for more than 457,000 older vehicles that have Takata air bags. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the warning, alerting owners who have vehicles that have unrepaired Takata air bags to not drive them until repairs are made and the defective air bag is replaced.

There are safety recalls, and then there are really time-consuming, expensive safety recalls. Toyota is experiencing the latter, having discovered earlier this year a defect in its twin-turbocharged V-6 truck engines that power the Tundra pickup truck as well as Lexus's LX luxury SUVs—at least, those 2022 to 2023 model-year variants built between November 2021 and February 2023 (or the same model years built between July 2021 and November 2022 for the LX). The issue can cause the engine stall unexpectedly; per Toyota's NHTSA recall notices to dealers:

Toyota has issued a major recall of its twin-turbocharged V-6 engines powering the 2022 and 2023 Tundra pickup trucks and Lexus LX SUVs. Engines produced between late 2021 and early 2023 might have machining debris left in the engine; causing engine knocks or, worse cases, a spun bearing and complete engine stall. At first, Toyota was unsure how many engines were contaminated, but now, months later, the solution is to replace more than 100,000 engines.
