The Butler County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam call they have received multiple complaints about. The scammer is calling residents claiming to be a member of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

Undersheriff Damion Cundiff says the man uses a spoofer to change his caller ID, which appears as the main line of the sheriff’s office. The caller is reportedly very aggressive on the phone, making threats of arrest if the person doesn’t pay immediately using Bitcoin. The sheriff’s office wants to make it clear that they will never call to collect money for fines, court fees, or any other payment.

Last week, an El Dorado resident lost $10,000 to the scammer. Hang up on anyone claiming to be from a law enforcement agency demanding payment of any kind. If unsure, contact the department yourself through a number you have verified as legitimate.
