An attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump was made while he was addressing a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
The sound of gunfire echoed shortly after Trump had taken to the stage in Butler, a city located approximately 30 miles north of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Here is a timeline detailing the sequence of events that unfolded at the rally.
The Republican candidate stepped onto the stage to the tune of God Bless the USA, a Lee Greenwood song that is a staple at the start of his campaign events. Trump spent time waving to the crowd until the song concluded at 6:05 p.m.
6:11pm: Gunfire erupts
Gunshots rang out as Trump was discussing the surge in border crossings under President Joe Biden's administration. The business tycoon was gesturing towards a graphic on a video board that depicted the recent rise in border crossings.
"That chart's a couple of months old. If you want to really see something that's sad, take a look at what happened."
Before he could complete his sentence, shots were fired, causing Trump to clutch his ear and neck area. He then ducked behind the lectern he was standing at.
The Secret Service dived into action, with gunshots sounding as they yelled "get down, get down, get down," amid screams from the crowd.
6:12pm: Trump whisked off stage
Officials took charge, announcing instructions from the podium.
"Hold, hold," commanded one officer. Another instructed, "On you. Ready, move! Go."
Trump was swiftly raised to his feet by officers following the gunfire, a bloodied ear and bloody marks on his face were seen as he acknowledged supporters with a fist pump while being led away.
Minutes after the incident at 6:14pm, the former president's motorcade departed the scene posthaste.
6:42pm: Both the Secret Service and Trump's team confirmed his safety
A spokesperson for the U. S. Secret Service conveyed that an unpleasant episode occurred at the rally but assured all that the former president was unharmed, per The Hill's report.
Following closely behind was the Trump campaign's announcement, informing that Trump "is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility."
7:24pm: Authorities acknowledged there victims
The Butler County District Attorney informed The Associated Press of the confirmed demise of the supposed shooter and another individual due to the incident.
8:13 p. m: President Joe Biden delivered an address to the nation
President Joe Biden was captured on camera discussing the weekend's events from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
During a conversation, President Biden revealed that he attempted to reach out to Trump via telephone, aiming to have a discussion on Saturday night.
"Look, there's no place in America for this kind of violence. It's sick. It's sick," commented Biden.
8:42pm: Donald Trump disclosed details about the incident
Posting on his social media platform Truth Social approximately two-and-a-half hours post the shooting incident, Trump expressed gratitude towards law enforcement and extended sympathies to the deceased attendee, mentioning his own injury, as he was struck in the ear by a bullet.
"It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead," said Trump. "I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA! ".
9:37pm: Praise for Trump publicized by his team on X
On X, which is the old Twitter, Trump's Director of Communications Margo Martin posted footage showing a tired-looking Trump descending the stairs of his personal aircraft, flanked by Secret Service agents.
"Strong and resilient. He will never stop fighting for America," Margo declared on the social media site.
