Strong condemnation and prayers were the reactions among political leaders from Rhode Island after learning that former President Donald Trump had been wounded Saturday night at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“Political violence of any kind is abhorrent and inexcusable,” Gov. Dan McKee posted on X. “Praying for the safety of former President Trump and all those at the rally in Pennsylvania today.

“There is no place for political violence of any kind in America, and I condemn whoever is responsible for this attack. I urge everyone to remain calm,” U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner, ranking member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement and Intelligence.

The Associated Press reported that law enforcement officials say the shooting is being investigated as an assassination attempt.

“The relentless attacks on President Trump have reached a new and horrifying low with this recent attempt on his life,” said Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Joe Powers. “They have impeached him, indicted him, and tried to jail him. Now, they have resorted to an attempted assassination. It makes you want to ask, what are they so afraid of?”

Powers called on all Americans, regardless of political affiliation, to condemn the attack and work together to uphold the principles of democracy and justice.

“We are all praying for President Trump, his family, and everyone involved, Powers added. “This is a critical moment for our nation, and we must stand united against such acts of violence and intimidation.”
