Donald Trump has broken his silence after the former President was "grazed by gunfire" at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania , on Saturday evening.

In a statement , that he shared on his Truth Social account, he wrote: "I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.

It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!"

Trump's response to the tragedy comes as the 78-year-old politician was the target of a shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania that is now being investigated as an assassination attempt. As the former president spoke about his plans for America, loud bangs rang out through the crowd. Trump was the seen in live videos of the rally clutching onto his right ear, then falling to the ground as three Secret Service agents rushed on-stage to protect him as attendees shouted: "Get down, get down, get down."

After the shooting, the politician was seen clutching his fist and raising his right arm into the air as blood dripped down his face. With the symbolic hand gesture, the businessman assured his supporters that he was alive and was rushed to a local medical facility to be checked out after suffering the minor injury.

After the shooting, two people, including the suspected gunman, were confirmed to be killed. A third rally-goer is also confirmed to be in critical condition in hospital. Eye-witnesses at the event claimed they saw Secret Service "blow [the suspect's head off]" just moments after the shots were fired at Trump.
