    RI, Mass. congressional representatives condemn ‘political violence’ in wake of Trump rally shooting

    (WPRI) — Southern New England’s elected representatives condemned all political violence in the wake of the shooting at former president Donald Trump’s Saturday afternoon rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

    Trump was whisked off the stage visibly bleeding from the head after gunshots rang out at the large gathering. The local district attorney told The Associated Press that the suspected shooter and one rally attendee are dead.

    In a post on social media , Rep. Seth Magaziner (RI-02) said, “There is no place for political violence of any kind in America, and I condemn whoever is responsible for this attack. I urge everyone to remain calm.”

    Rep. Jake Auchincloss (MA-04) and Rep. Gabe Amo (RI-01) both thanked law enforcement for their quick response, with Auchincloss adding , “The loss of innocent life is a tragedy.”

    “Political violence is as reprehensible as it is un-American,” Amo said .

    Massachusetts Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren also condemned the violence on social media. “I am praying for the family of the victim of this shooting and grateful for the safety of the former President and the brave work of Secret Service on the scene,” Markey wrote.

    Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse echoed Markey’s words, wishing the former president “a fast recovery” and pledging to keep the victim’s family in his prayers.

    Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed stressed that “whoever did this must be held accountable.”

    “It appears former President Trump will make a full recovery,” Reed wrote . “We are glad he is safe.”

    Sources tell The Associated Press that the shooting is now being investigated as an assassination attempt.
