    Illinois politicians react to gunfire at Trump rally

    (KTVI) – Secret Service agents rushed former U.S. President Donald Trump off the stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, following gunfire.

    Trump’s campaign said in a statement that the former president was “fine” after the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania. A local prosecutor said the suspected gunman and at least one attendee are dead.

    The shooting at Trump’s rally is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president and presumptive Republican nominee, law enforcement officials tell the Associated Press.

    Several politicians and prominent supporters from Illinois have responded to situation:

    J.B. Pritzker (Illinois Governor)

    Pritzker, a Democrat, offered the following remarks via social media platform X:

    “Violence is never the answer in our democracy. I am closely monitoring the situation and praying for former President Trump’s recovery. Thankful to the Secret Service for their quick response.”

    Tammy Duckworth (Illinois U.S. Senator)

    Duckworth, a Democrat, offered the following remarks via social media platform X:

    “There is absolutely no excuse—and no place whatsoever—for violence in American politics, and those responsible for this must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. I am keeping Donald Trump in my thoughts and hoping he has a swift and full recovery.”

    Dick Durbin (Illinois U.S. Senator)

    Durbin, a Democrat, offered the following statement to FOX 2:

    Pritzker stands by Biden as others show concern

    “Political violence is never acceptable. I’m keeping the former president, the bystander who was tragically killed, and all who were injured or whose safety was threatened in my thoughts. Sending my deepest thanks to law enforcement for helping keep those in attendance safe.”

    Mike Bost (Illinois U.S. Representative)

    Bost, a Republican, offered the following statement to FOX 2:

    “Tracy [his wife] and I are shocked by the news of the attack on President Trump in Pennsylvania this afternoon. We are monitoring the situation closely and praying for the President.”

    Kathy Salvi (Chairwoman-Elect, Illinois Republican Party)

    On X, the Illinois Republican Party posted a statement from Kathy Salvi:

    “The Republicans of Illinois are united and stand with President Trump. We express our full support for President Trump and his family. We appreciate the prompt response by law enforcement and the Secret Service.”
