A few minutes on Saturday changed several lives forever and also put the small town of Butler on the map in a very different way.

50-year-old Corey Comperatore of Buffalo Township will be remembered as a hero for shielding his family from gunfire at the rally for former President Donald Trump.

Family members, friends and elected officials remember Comperatore as a dedicated family man and public servant who went out of his way to help others in the community.

A Freeport Area High School graduate, Comperatore formerly served as chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company and was a life member of the department.

Matt Achilles of Buffalo Township, who lived near Comperatore for four years, described him as a good neighbor and dedicated public servant.

Other victims were 57-year-old David Dutch, of Plum who is in stable condition after being shot in the liver and chest, but remains in an induced coma.

A second man, 74-year-old James Copenhaver of Moon Township, is also listed in stable condition.

A GoFundMe has been established for the surviving victims, along with the family of Comperatore. The site has raised $3.6 million, surpassing a $1 million goal.

A GoFundMe account authorized by Trump for the victims of the shooting has raised over $4 million

A separate account for Comperatore has raised more than $500,000.

Pennsylvania Gov., Josh Shapiro has ordered that flags be flown at half-staff in honor of Comperatore.

"Earlier today, I spoke to his wife and his two daughters. They asked me to share that Corey died a hero — diving on his family to protect them from danger," Shapiro said.
