As we previously shared, on Saturday (July 13), Donald Trump was hosting a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania when a gunman opened fire, leaving Trump grazed on his right ear, one person dead, and at least two others severely injured. The victim who passed has since been identified as 50-year-old former fire chief Corey Comperatore . He is survived by his wife and two daughters, whom he shielded as bullets flew at the rally.

The Secret Service snipers killed the gunman, who was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks , of Bethel Park, PA. Crooks opened fire from a nearby rooftop with an AR-15-style rifle. Following the shooting, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to thank the Secret Service for their prompt response, send condolences to the families of all of the victims, and reveal that “a bullet pierced [his right ear] during the shooting.

Current President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke out, in addition to former President Barack Obama . On Sunday (July 14), former President Donald Trump’s wife, former First Lady Melania Trump, also issued a statement on the assassination attempt on her husband. Melania called the gunman a “monster” and urged America to “reunite.”

After surviving the assassination attempt, Ronny Jackson , Donald Trump’s former White House physician, said the 45th President told him over the phone that he’s alive today because he diverted his focus of attention as shots rang out. Speaking with the New York Times , Jackson, who is now a Texas congressman, said Trump believes his life was spared when he turned sideways to check immigration statistics from a chart displayed on a screen while on stage.

As soon as Donald Trump turned his head toward the immigration chart, Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire missing Trump’s head, instead grazing him on the right ear. Jackson said Trump specifically credited the “border patrol” and the “border patrol chart” for saving his life.

There are several viral photos and digital renderings showing the bullet’s trajectory and Donald Trump’s head as the incident unfolded. One photo in particular was taken by New York Times photographer Doug Mills , who was able to capture the moment the bullet whizzed through the air above Donald Trump’s shoulder, nearly missing his head. Mills told ‘CBS Mornings,’ he believed the greatest photo taken at the rally was of Trump raising his fist after being nicked on the ear; however, in comparison to his photos of the whizzing bullet, he realized he had captured a super rare and historic moment.
