DHS inspector general investigating Secret Service following Trump assassination attempt

The Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Inspector General has launched an investigation into the Secret Service's handling of former President Donald Trump's security following the assassination attempt at his campaign rally on July 13.

The DHS internal auditor, an independent office within the department, posted an announcement on the DHS website that stated the investigation will "evaluate the United States Secret Service's (Secret Service) process for securing former President Trump's July 13, 2024 campaign event."

The move comes as the Secret Service and the DHS slow-walked answers to lawmakers on Capitol Hill about the circumstances surrounding the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, last Saturday.

Republicans atop the House Homeland Security Committee, House Judiciary Committee, and House Oversight Committee have each inquired with the agency and department for information about the FBI investigation into the incident.

Lawmakers on the oversight committee have lamented that the DHS is preventing the Secret Service from cooperating.

Republicans are pushing hard for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign. Some have threatened to defund her salary and conduct independent investigations, and public congressional hearings are already getting put on committee schedules — all as Cheatle has maintained that she is here to stay.

In her first interview since the incident, Cheatle told ABC News on Monday that she would not resign but added that “the buck stops with me.”
