(WKBN) – Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle’s resignation comes a day after appearing before a House Oversight Committee where she was questioned for hours.

Congressman Dave Joyce, R014th District, calls what unfolded at the hearing a “black eye” on the Secret Service.

Cheatle has faced intense scrutiny since the July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania where an assassination attempt was made against former President Donald Trump. At Monday’s hearing, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle asked Cheatle numerous questions about the security failures there.

“Her answers yesterday were basically non-answers. She would have been better off putting it off and just saying we will wait until the FBI or our internal investigations are through so we can property answer the questions that are being asked because Americans want to know,” Joyce said.

Lawmakers have vowed to keep investigating.
